In 1789 two Dutch pioneers - physician Jan Rudolph Deiman and merchant Adriaan Paets van Troostwijk - for the first time in history decomposed water (H2O) into its constitutes hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) using an electrostatic machine and a Leyden Jar.  

Presently hydrogen is identified as a key enabling energy carrier in a renewable energy system. Integration of H2 in the energy system can reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, improve the security of energy supply, and facilitate a paradigm shift in the implementation of sustainable energy technology.

The production of H2 by means of the electrolysis of water is gaining more and more  interest worldwide as an option for load-levelling of electricity generated from renewable sources and for distributed hydrogen production for mobility applications.
